A man usually takes 2 to 3 years to propose to his long-term girlfriend.
Keeping this in mind, be careful that you aren’t assuming he is taking too long to propose, when in fact, the time frame is still within the average time it usually takes for a guy to propose to his long-term girlfriend.
Usually, he already knows he wants to marry her well before this time frame has elapsed.
Nevertheless, he waits to propose so as to accomplish some financial, professional, or personal goals to put himself in the best possible position to get married to his girlfriend.
If the length of the relationship is within the time frame of 2 to 3 years, there is no need to panic quite yet, especially if he has already had conversations with you about a desire to get married and have children.
All he might be doing is waiting to get to a financial, professional, or personal goal so that he is the most ready to take on the responsibility of marring you and being the main breadwinner.
You are probably champing at the bit to get married because you have already envisioned living the rest of your life with him and having a family with him.
This is understandable, but know that the expectations of you in marriage are different from those of a man.
You are going to look to him to be a good provider.
No matter how nice it sounds to say that you would be an equal financial partner in a marriage, the truth is, at some point, you will expect him to take on the lion’s share of the expenses, especially when you start having children.
He knows this, as his parents raised him with an understanding that in marriage he would be expected to be the provider.
He saw his own father being the provider in the family he was raised in.
As a consequence, he knew that in his future he would be expected to provide for his wife, just like his father did for his mother growing up.
As long as you have both talked and are on the same page about wanting marriage and children, and he has consistently demonstrated that he is preparing for such an outcome through how much he is aligning in his life, such as his finances, you don’t have to panic quite yet.
He is working hard and making money, saving as much as he can.
He has met and continues to meet people in your life that you love, such as family members and close friends.
There have been several moments he has made sacrifices to make you happy, such as giving up time with his guy friends so that he can get more time with you.
He has already demonstrated his financial solvency by continuing to take you out on dates, celebrating relationship milestones with you by taking you on fun vacations, and providing financial assistance to you at times when a bill was due and money was running tight for the month.
All of these are strong indications that he continues to like you and a proposal is imminent.
Never get ahead of yourself and take matters into your own hands by applying pressure on him to propose to you.
This is a phenomenal mistake, as it forces his hand before he is ready, which means that the likelihood of divorce is strong if he were to give in to the pressure and prematurely propose to you.
Let the relationship naturally mature.
As long as the relationship is within the window of 2 to 3 years in which the average guy usually proposes to his girlfriend, you have no reason to panic or rush anything.
This said, if it has been longer than 3 years and he hasn’t demonstrated any of the actions that indicate he is preparing for marriage, you have to talk to him to find out whether you are both still on the same page about wanting marriage and family.
