how to figure out if she is shy and interested or friendly and not ?

I have a female collegue who doesnt associate much with boys beyond colleagueShip as far as i know, i liked her because she is really beautiful and talking to her showed how much intellegent she is. She was friendly but later when it was obvious on my face how much i like her she backed off little bit and tries to end any conversation i triy to initiate with her. Now i feel she wants to tell me that she is not interested but at times i feel like there could be another reason and i get lost on signs and got things complicated. She is a happy girl, kind and always smiling so its hard to indicate. I wish if you could help a brother out.

Ps. We are still studying Medicine in University and she is an arab.
