He looks sad when you aren't around

I have this crush on a guy and my friend always looks at him to see if he is looking at me, or coming my way, ect. She told me that whenever i’m not around for the day, she said that he looks very sad and leaves the area he is normally in which isn’t typical behavior for him, whereas when i’m present and in his sight, he gets happy and smiles widely and just acts goofy with his friends. He’s done this a couple of times. What could this mean?
